"Unconscious But Breathing" A First Aid Guide for Emergency Situations.
Here is a clear, easy-to-remember guide for first aid when a person is unconscious but breathing:
First Aid: Unconscious but Breathing
If someone is not awake but is breathing normally, your goal is to keep their airway open and prevent choking until help arrives.
1. Check for safety
Make sure the area is safe for you and the victim.
2. Check responsiveness
Gently shake their shoulders and shout:
“Are you okay?”
No response → proceed.
3. Check breathing
• Tilt their head back slightly.
• Look for chest rise.
• Listen for breath sounds.
• Feel for air on your cheek.
If they are breathing normally, continue.
4. Call emergency services
Dial your local emergency number and explain the situation.
5. Put them in the Recovery Position
This keeps the airway open and prevents choking on vomit or lagging of tongue.
How to do the recovery position:
1. Kneel beside the person’s left side.
2. Straighten their legs.
3. Bring unconscious person’s right arm across their chest and place the other arm against their cheek.
4. Bend the right knee up.
5. Gently roll them toward you onto their LEFT side.
6. Tilt their head back slightly to keep the airway open.
7. Adjust the top leg so the hip and knee are bent (stable position).
6. Monitor their breathing
• Stay with them until help arrives.
• Check breathing regularly.
• If breathing stops → begin CPR.
7. Keep them warm
Use a blanket or jacket if needed, but avoid overheating.
When NOT to use the recovery position
• If you suspect a spinal injury unless they are vomiting or struggling to breathe.
In those cases, minimal movement may be necessary.
